SERMON NOTES - Psalm 119:1-8, "At the Top of the List"
One Psalm, 22 stanzas, 176 verses, all about one thing: The Word of God
Acrostic - all 8 lines of each stanza begins with the same Hebrew letter in order
119:1-8, all begin with the first letter, Aleph
These verses contain a CONVERSATION between the Psalmist and God
revealing the WAY to HAPPINESS for the one whose HEART IS UNDIVIDED
1. God, you say here that those who are happy (blessed) are those who walk in your Law;
those who seek You with a whole heart. vv.1-3
2. And I am committed to You as my supreme authority, what You say, goes, and I want to obey. (v 4)
- I am supposed to be diligent to obey, but I know I am not, so I can either ignore my sin, and be judged
or I can admit it to You and find forgiveness.
3. But when I am confronted with Your standard, I realize just how far I fall short; I am a sinner,
and not righteous at all..(v.5)
would that my way be steadfast in following Your Word...but it's not.
and I am not OK with that, at all...even though I fail and fail, I want to obey...
BUT the WORD (Jeremiah 10:23) says, the way of a man is not in himself, it is not the man who directs his steps...
AND that the steps of a man are established by the Lord, when he delights in His way.
SO....I can trust you God, to provide both the standard and the means to attaining it -
JESUS CHRIST'S WORK - The Cross, the Resurrection, all of it!
Galatians 2:20, it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me....
4. But admitting my sin is not enough, your Law is still there, demanding to be obeyed. IT MUST BE OBEYED!
so, I need to keep moving toward an obedient way of living (6--7)
This way of life is happiness, after all, You have declared it!
5. And the desire I have to obey You is such that I make this prayer of commitment. (v. 8)
I PROMISE:
I will keep your statutes
(but I CONFESS AND KNOW that without your power, I will NEVER be able to keep them)
SO I ASK AND PRAY:
do not utterly forsake me!
(in other words, stick with me as I walk in determination to obey, without You I am lost!!!)

GERMANTOWN PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH
Lord’s Day Worship January 11, 2015
Therefore let us be grateful for receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken,
and thus let us offer to God acceptable worship, with reverence and awe.
Hebrews 12:28
CALL TO WORSHIP from Psalm 118:21-24
The stone that the builders rejected has become the cornerstone.
This is the Lord's doing; it is marvelous in our eyes.
This is the day that the Lord has made;
Let us rejoice and be glad in it!
HYMNAL, #210, “Praise to the Lord, the Almighty”
INVOCATION AND LORD’S PRAYER
Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name. Thy kingdom come,
Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread,
and forgive us our debts, as we have forgiven our debtors. And lead us not
into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one. For Thine is the
kingdom and the power and the glory, forever. Amen.
PROFESSION OF FAITH (Apostles’ Creed)
I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth:
And in Jesus Christ His only Son, our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,
born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, dead, and buried; He descended into hell*;
the third day He rose again from the dead; He ascended into heaven,
and is seated on the right hand of God the Father Almighty;
from there He shall come to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit; the holy catholic church;**
the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body;
and the life everlasting. Amen.
*refers to the place of the dead, not the place of punishment
**”catholic” means “universal” church, the true church in all times and places
CONFESSION OF SIN - responsively, from Psalm 51:1-4
Have mercy on us, O God, according to Your steadfast love;
according to Your abundant mercy blot out our transgressions.
Wash us thoroughly from our iniquity, and cleanse us from our sin!
For we know my transgressions, and our sin is ever before us.
Against You, You only, have we sinned and done what is evil in Your sight,
so that You may be justified in Your words
and blameless in Your judgment.
ASSURANCE OF GOD’s FORGIVENESS and GRACE, Matthew 11:28-30
Jesus said: “Come to Me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. take
My yoke upon you, and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will
find rest for your souls. For My yoke is easy, and My burden is light.”
COLLECTION of TITHES and OFFERINGS from 2 Corinthians 9:7-9
Each one must give as he has decided in his heart, not reluctantly or under compulsion,
for God loves a cheerful giver. And God is able to make all grace abound to you, so that
having all sufficiency in all things at all times, you may abound in every good work.
As it is written, “He has distributed freely, He has given to the poor;
His righteousness endures forever.”
*HYMNAL #815, “Praise God From Whom All Blessings Flow"
*PSALM 1:1-6 tune: Hymnal #128, “I Sing the Mighty Power of God” 3 verses
PRAYER OF INTERCESSION - Philippians 4:6-7
Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with
thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which
surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
PRAYER FOR ILLUMINATION
Almighty God, full of grace and wisdom, teach us, O Lord, the way of your statutes,
and we will keep it to the end; give to us understanding, that we may keep your
law and observe it with our whole hearts for Your word is a lamp unto our feet
and a light unto our path. Amen.
